The first generation of the BMW 3 Series is known as the E21. Introduced for the 1976 model year, the E21 was the first in a long line of compact luxury cars, and was offered from the factory in a two door sedan body style, although coachbuilt convertibles were produced by Baur.

The BMW 323i was the top variant for the E21 3 Series. Introduced in 1978, the 323i was available as a four door sedan, and was powered by BMW's M20B23 engine. This 2.3L inline six engine generated 141hp sent to the rear wheels via four or five speed manual transmissions.
